NOTES TO APPENDIX 1

1. The HTML document shown in Fig. 24 is a projection of the corresponding Source Document stored in the DEEDS Corpus in a format allowing effective indexing of the charter content and attributes by the Search Engine. Charter attributes such as type, source, etc. are coded using the HTML « meta » tag  elements. A document’s meta tag elements also include mappings of the charter’s original date to various period grids (3, 5, 10, 15, 20 years) as well as to a variable period grid (« av »). The use of HTML projections of the source document allow for the creation of multiple projections of the same charter when applying different normalization routines. Each projection will further serve as another processing channel (see Fig. 7).

2. Table 1 contains values of word-pattern frequencies grouped chronologically (by period specified in column 1) and scaled by dividing the total number of word-pattern occurrences in any given period by the maximum number of occurrences in the period found in the given set of word-patterns. Each column is headed « w2 », « w3 », etc. and contains data for sets of two-word patterns, three-word patterns, etc. correspondingly. The last column is entitled « estimate ». It is calculated as the sum of values produced by individual word-pattern sets where each value is adjusted by using a dynamically computed « weigh ». The « weight » is calculated as the number of words in the word-patterns of a given set, divided by the maximum number of words in the word-pattern and then raised to a power of 2.

3. The date estimate (Fig. 26) is calculated as an average of estimates.

4. The accuracy of the chronological evaluation delivered by the current implementation of our methodology using word-pattern frequencies varies depending upon the properties of a given charter, but it can be significantly increased by the careful use of statistical computations.
